The week in the market

5–11 October 2026

A closed week, issued the morning it closed and never rewritten. Weeks run Monday to Sunday, from midnight UTC, 8am in Perth.

Snapshot ·

10,885

cars left the market, down 0.0% on the 7 days before; used exits down 12.6% on the same 962 sources

At least 8,407 proved by the seller's own page. One count per car, no listing of it still live; $397.9M in final asks, a ceiling on the deals.

In brief

  1. 1Exits ran down 0.0% (−1) on the 7 days before: 11,062 cars against 11,063, at least 8,407 of them with the seller's own proof of sale.
  2. 2Dealer sites held 63 days of used stock at the week's pace, from 49 in WA to 68 in NSW; electric cars 64 days against 54 for petrol.
  3. 3Dealers cut 21,722 cars' prices against 3,556 rises: 1.96 cuts a day per 100 cars live, up 2.2% on the 7 days before; the median cut was $1,000.
  4. 4The median used asking price closed at $28,490 over 105,225 cars; the used rule changed on 8 Oct, so it is not compared with the 7 days before.
  5. 5Spotlot same-car ask index: the asking prices of the 92,401 used cars on lots right through the week fell 0.4%, value-weighted, with 17.4% of them repriced. It measures what the week's wait cost those cars, not the market's price level. By powertrain: petrol −0.4%, diesel −0.4%, hybrid −0.4%, plug-in hybrid −0.3%, electric −0.4%.
  6. 6Electric cars were 4.4% of the used stock at the close and 3.1% of the used cars that left, +0.3 pts on the 7 days before on the panel. Plug-in hybrids were 0.9% of the stock, median build 2025 and 6,245 km: near-new cars.

Computed from the figures below, each with its count; nothing is a forecast.

Series breaks inside this period

2026-10-08 · used rule changed
From 08 Oct 2026 the daily roll-ups count used cars by the one rule, not marked new and 1,000 km or more where the odometer is known, instead of the used label alone. On the snapshot of 07 Oct 2026 the label counted 100,538 cars standing and the rule 106,753, a step of +6,215; every used-stock level, used ask and used-km figure in the roll-ups steps with it. No earlier day is rewritten. Demos past the floor and cars of unstated condition come in; labelled-used cars under 1,000 km go out.

2026-10-09 · daily car counts recounted whole
On 9 October 2026 every day from 11 August was recounted over the whole UTC day. Until then each day's cars that left, cars proved sold and cars cut or raised were counted at 12:50 UTC and never finished, so the afternoon crawl was missing: about a third of exits since September. Reports issued before 12 October compared those part-day counts and keep them as issued; from this issue both windows of every comparison are whole days.

Read the day-by-day table across a step as two series rather than one; a level is not compared across it. Nothing has been smoothed.

Prices: the market and waiting cars

Spotlot same-car ask index: the same 92,401 cars asked 0.4% less at the close of the week than at its start.

The used cars advertised on a watched site at both the start and the close of the period, on the same listing, one car once: the sum of their closing asks over the sum of their opening asks, minus one, so a dearer car weighs more. Prices are the listing's own: before its first change after the close where one exists, else as shown now, else the final ask its exit recorded; the opening price is the one before its first change after the start. A change of price basis on the same listing counts as a move. Pairs more than halved or doubled are set aside as errors and counted. Weeks run Monday to Monday UTC; the level chains the weeks from 100 on 17 August 2026.

Of the 20 biggest models, the waiting Hyundai Kona lost most, −0.8% over 984 cars, and the Mitsubishi Triton least, −0.3%.

How long the period’s sales had been advertised

5,970 used and demo cars proved sold in the period, of which 4,717 publish the seller’s own listing date and are what this is measured over; the median is 27 days. Unproved exits are excluded: a page that went quiet is not a sale, and a days-to-sell figure built from both would be measuring two different things.

The detail

Against the period before

Against the 7 days before, 28 Sept to 4 Oct: 7 of 7 days recorded in each window. Flows are summed over recorded days, levels read on the last; a comparison the windows cannot bear is left blank with its reason.

This period against the 7 days before, 2026-09-28 to 2026-10-04: cars that left the market, of them proved, cars cut, cars with a rise, cars live at close and the median used ask at close, with the change and, where the windows recorded different numbers of days, the figures per recorded day.

On the panel: 962 sources watched through both periods. The change in used exits, proved exits, cuts and rises is measured on the 962 sources watched from 17 Aug and still read at the close, which carried 93.9% of the period's used exits (6,097 of 6,494); a site joining or leaving the watch between the periods cannot move them. They are the constant panel panel-2026-08-17, the same sources for every change in every issue until it is renewed. Levels are the whole watched market. Used exits there are by the one rule, dated by the last day advertised.

Median used asking price at close: the used rule changed on 8 Oct (+6,215 cars counted as used), so the two closes count used cars differently.

Cars proved sold: cars whose exit the seller's own page proved: its SOLD text, or a 404/410. All exits: cars that left, recounted on 2026-09-03 against the live listings of that day, the wider figure and the one to read with care: it was recounted after the period closed, so a car that has since been re-advertised has left it. Cars cut: cars repriced down, one per car per day. A dash is a day recorded before these columns existed, not a zero.

“over” is the cars whose price the median was taken across, which is fewer than the cars standing. Median km is the median odometer of the same used cars, read at the close, half a day after the median ask. The proved column sums to the same total as the day-by-day table, because both are written in one pass under one rule. The cut column does not: cars repriced down IN THAT STATE. A car advertised in two states is in both, so this column does not sum to the market total.

Days to sell by state and segment, 5 Oct to 11 Oct

Median days advertised at exit, used and proved only, by state and body segment · cars · n = 4,285 · as at 12 Oct 2026, 07:23 am AWST · a cell under the floor of 30 cars prints its count instead of a median. Each cell is the median days advertised at exit with the number of cars beneath it. [u] marks a cell under the floor of 30 cars, shown with its count and no figure (33 such cells here). In each row the highest and lowest figures are in bold; nothing is coloured, because a colour would say more than the sample does.

What the prices in this report are

As at 2026-10-11, 99,890 live prices were quoted drive-away, 46,915 excluding government charges, and 92,321 did not say. Every median above is a median across that mix.

The corpus behind these figures

Spotlot monitored 234,336 listings on 2026-10-05 and 235,733 on 2026-10-11 (158,337 physical cars after syndication). listings monitored by Spotlot, which grows with coverage; not a count of the Australian market.

What this report withholds, and why

  • new to market: first seen during a coverage ramp is discovery, not listing; withheld until coverage stabilises
  • median ask movement: a median over a sample whose size moves with coverage measures composition; withheld until a week's n holds still
